Welcome to the Summer Reading Program!
What You Need to Know…
The purpose of our summer reading program is to help your child continue to grow and provide a smooth transition into the 2017-2018 school year by encouraging them to read each day throughout the summer.
The goal for children entering 5th grade is to read 30 minutes a day for 40 days this summer. (Summer vacation this year is 11 weeks long; if your child reads 5 days a week for 8 weeks this summer, he or she will meet the reading goal.)
For every day that your child meets his or her reading goal, have them color the day on the attached calendar. In addition, your child must keep a list of every book that he or she reads. When your child returns to school in the fall, they will need to turn in the completed calendar and the list of books read to their teacher. All students who meet their goal for the summer will earn a reward party with the elementary librarian in the fall.
Fifth Grade Required Reading
My Side of the Mountain by Jean Craighead George is required by the fifth grade teachers, and students will be tested on this book during the first week of school. Returning Students may sign out a copy of this book before the end of the school year.
Below is a link to a list of recommended books for students entering the 5th grade. Use your local libraries to look for books. If you have trouble finding a book on this list, you may substitute books.
The titles on the suggested reading list have been approved by your child's teacher. Each book is linked to its Amazon page. Just click on an image to read a summary of the book on Amazon. In most instances, you will also be able to look inside the book and read a few pages.
